EL PORTAL / YOSEMITE — October 26, 2026. Tomorrow, Tuesday, October 27, is a federal fee-free entrance day at Yosemite National Park for qualifying U.S. citizens and residents, in observance of Theodore Roosevelt’s birthday. However, a waived standard entrance fee does not mean every park road or trail is free from restrictions.

According to Yosemite’s October 23 conditions bulletin, the El Portal Road connection from Highway 140 was open, while stabilization work at El Capitan Bridge could cause roughly 15-minute weekday delays between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Yosemite also warns of weekday delays on Big Oak Flat Road, another popular approach.

Visitors need separate information for trails and camping

The National Park Service says the Mist Trail access near Vernal Fall is restricted on some weekdays through October during repairs; the John Muir Trail provides an alternative at certain times. Yosemite’s Half Dome cables are down for the season. Park camping, lodging and reservations are not made free by an entrance-fee waiver, and some campgrounds are closed for the season.

El Portal-area businesses can expect visitor trips, but this article does not claim an official increase in traffic or that any specific parking lot is open. Check road conditions immediately before traveling, especially for high-elevation routes where fall weather can change rapidly.
